Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an important educational pathway at Cardijn College and provide students with the practical and technical skills needed in the contemporary workplace. VET courses are part of national training packages, which are updated regularly in consultation with relevant industry bodies. They also follow a framework whereby all students are required to meet the same “competencies” in order to gain their qualification.

Studying a VET course allows students to develop skills and depositions in preparation for the transition from school into the workforce.

Our Marcellin Campus is specifically set up to place VET at the very centre of the learning experience for students. While the development of the whole person remains pivotal, this campus has an emphasis on all of the following three outcomes:

  • SACE
  • Vocational Education & Training
  • School-based Apprenticeships

A School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, which is most often achieved in Year 12, has a number of benefits including:

  • Training will contribute towards the SACE
  • Starting a chosen career or trade while still at school (learn and earn)
  • Gaining experience in your chosen trade or vocation
  • School-based training will convert to full-time or part-time post school (dependent on performance of the apprentice and employers discretion)
  • Offers variety in attending school part of the week, going to work on some days and attending a training provider on others
  • Options in undertaking Vocational Education & Training

Students from the Cardijn College campus may:

  • Undertake VET training on the Marcellin Campus on day a week while studying at Cardijn as part of their educational program
  • Request to transfer to the Marcellin Campus to continue their study as part of a VET focused pathway
  • Have a VET course brokered for them at an outside provider such as TAFE, while either continuing to study at Cardijn or moving to the Marcellin campus

The variety of VET courses available to students at Cardijn College is extensive and includes additional training areas, but is not limited to:

  • Food and Hospitality
  • Tourism and Events Management
  • Retail
  • Plumbing
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Animal Studies
  • Information Technology
  • Business and Entrepreneurism
  • Fitness

VET can be studied as a stand-alone subject or augment SACE subjects, such as Workplace Practices and Community Studies or a School-Based Apprenticeship, studied at the Marcellin Campus or with an outside provider as part of your learning pathway.

VET provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in a range of vocational areas without restricting future opportunities, which may include a pathway to university. It should be noted that most completed Certificate III qualifications now count as a university entry subject. Through VET programs of study students are better prepared for the workforce and have a chance to explore one or more possible future career pathways, while developing their employability skills.
